Yoshiro Kimura Vase Blue Glaze with Black Iromon Design 23 cm with Signed Box

A ceramic flower vase by Yoshiro Kimura, finished in a deep blue glaze (heki-yu) with a black iromon (colored motif) design. The work is accompanied by its original signed wooden box (tomobako).

Yoshiro Kimura is a ceramic artist based in Higashi-Hiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. He became fascinated with deep, saturated blue tones after seeing the sky and sea during extensive travels abroad, including the Sahara and the Aegean Sea, and after returning to Japan he studied ceramics and built his Taiso-gama kiln in 1975. His signature glaze, known as "Kimura Blue," has brought him wide recognition, including first selection in the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition in 1976 and the Encouragement Prize there in 1984. He has since received numerous honors such as the Hiroshima Culture Encouragement Prize, the Kaneshige Toyo Prize, and the Asahi Shimbun Prize at the 67th Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition in 2020. His works are held in major museum collections including the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, the British Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
