Yamanaka Sanpei (山中三平) was a Japanese creative kokeshi (sosaku kokeshi) artist, born in 1926 in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture. He withdrew from the Faculty of Engineering at Yamagata University and devoted himself to photography, exhibiting at the Nika Exhibition (Nika-ten). He later focused on the creation of sosaku kokeshi, dolls that depart from regional traditional styles in favor of individual artistic expression, and was recognized as a member (dojin) of the Japan Kokeshi Craft Association. His works are characterized by natural wood-grain finishes paired with painted floral and hair motifs.
