A black-lacquered document box (tebunko) by Yamada Heiando, decorated with orchid maki-e on a black ground and accompanied by its wooden box. It is suited for storing writing implements, important letters and documents, or a collection of cloth items, and also makes an elegant decorative interior piece.
Artist / Maker: Yamada Heiando (山田平安堂 / 平安堂造)
Subject / Motif: Orchid, considered an auspicious motif
Technique: Maki-e on a black-lacquered ground
Dimensions: Approx. 22 cm x 27.8 cm x height 6.3 cm
Included: Accompanying wooden box, which shows damage and warping; one lacquer fragment that came off during photography is included as well
Condition: A long-term stored item, said to be unused, but some flaws are present. There is lacquer loss at one corner, and a crack with lacquer loss at one spot (circled in white in images 9 and 10). Age-related wear, scuffs, and small scratches are visible, especially on the underside, but overall the piece retains good luster and condition. The lacquer losses are hidden when the lid is closed. Please refer to the photos for the item's current appearance and condition.
The orchid is considered an auspicious motif, and the maki-e decoration is beautifully executed.
