An original Japanese woodblock print (shin-hanga) titled "Nezu Shrine" by Tsuchiya Koitsu, dated 1932. This is a later impression, printed from the original woodblocks after the artist's death. The scene depicts a woman holding a snake-eye umbrella beneath a softly glowing street lamp, evoking warmth on a cold winter night. Nezu Shrine, located in Nezu, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, was established in 1706 as a guardian shrine for the Tokugawa shogun Ienobu.
Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870 Hamamatsu \u2014 1949) studied under Kobayashi Kiyochika from 1886 as a live-in apprentice, and later took up shin-hanga at the encouragement of the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, whom he met in 1932. His "Tokyo Views" series is regarded as a masterpiece of shin-hanga landscape printing.
