A lidded yunomi (tea cup) associated with the Tottori Ikeda clan, decorated with the Aoi (hollyhock) crest rendered in maki-e lacquer on the lid.

  • Subject / Motif: Aoi (hollyhock) crest
  • Technique: Maki-e lacquer on the lid
  • Dimensions: Height approx. 7.5 cm; lid diameter approx. 9.5 cm; bowl approx. 5.8 x 9.0 cm
  • Signature / Seal / Box: Maker's stamp on the underside of the cup, present but illegible
  • Condition: Some scratches and dirt. This is an old item; please purchase with an understanding of its age. Please refer to the photos for the item's current appearance and condition.

It was found together with a matching set of dining ware (bowls, see photos 7 and 8) said to have belonged to the Tottori Ikeda clan. The dining trays and this lid bear the Aoi crest in maki-e, while the wooden bowls bear the clan's swallowtail butterfly (Inshu-cho) crest in maki-e.

The Tottori Ikeda clan was granted use of the Aoi crest through the marriage of Toku-hime, the second daughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu, to Ikeda Terumasa. Use of the Aoi crest outside the Tokugawa (Matsudaira) family was strictly restricted, and the Tottori Ikeda clan was the sole exception.
