A Shigaraki-yaki (Shigaraki ware) hanging flower vase (kake-hanaire) by Takahashi Rakusai. Shigaraki ware from Shiga Prefecture is prized for its rustic, earthy character in the wabi tradition.
Takahashi Rakusai is a hereditary name of a family of Shigaraki-yaki potters, considered leading masters of modern Shigaraki ware. The 3rd Rakusai (born Mitsunosuke, 1898-1976) studied at the Kyoto Ceramic Research Institute from 1915, began working in Shigaraki in 1916, and succeeded to the name Rakusai in 1917. He was recognized as a holder of Shiga Prefecture's technique-preservation status for Shigaraki ware in 1941 and again designated an Intangible Cultural Property holder in 1964, won a grand prize at the 1960 Brussels World's Fair ceramics section, and received honors including a Labor Minister commendation. Together with the 4th-generation Ueda Naokata, he is regarded as one of the two great modern masters.
