A Shigaraki uzukumaru (crouching) vase serving as a hanging flower vessel (kakehanaire) by Sugimoto Sadamitsu, made at the Teragaito kiln. It can be displayed either standing on a surface or hung, and comes with its original signed wooden box (tomobako).
Sugimoto Sadamitsu (born 1935 in Tokyo) built an anagama kiln in the mountains of Shigaraki in 1968 and began producing tea ceramics and relief works. From 1974 he studied under Rinzai Zen priest Tachibana Daiki, the 511th abbot of Daitoku-ji, who in 1976 gave his kiln the name Teragaito. His work spans Shigaraki, Iga, Mino, Oribe and Shino styles, pursuing a wabi-sabi aesthetic he described as a return to Momoyama. His pieces have been collected by institutions including the Yale University Art Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art in Shiga, and the Gyokusen Museum in Osaka, and he has held solo exhibitions in the United States and Germany.
