A Shigaraki-ware tea bowl (chawan) crafted by Ueda Juho. It is a very well-made piece with a calm, composed atmosphere, showing the traditional character of Shigaraki-yaki.
Ueda Juho (Jiho) was the founder of Sotoen, a renowned Shigaraki-ware kiln in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. In 1951 (Showa 26), he took over the large climbing kiln (noborigama) from the 4th-generation Ueda Naokata, a kiln originally built in the Edo period and later used continuously by Sotoen. He worked as both a potter and craftsman, dedicating himself to Shigaraki ceramics and to the promotion of the Shigaraki kiln district throughout his life. Ueda Juho passed away in July 2021 at the age of 95, and Sotoen later produced a limited commemorative series called 'Juho's Kiln' in his memory. His works include tea bowls and flower vases characteristic of traditional Shigaraki-yaki, noted for natural ash glaze effects from wood-firing in the climbing kiln.
