Ono Jiro Kozan-gama Yurihikinsai Gold-Glazed Flattened Vase Hako with Box

A flattened vase (henko) by Ono Jiro of the Kozan-gama kiln in Ureshino, Saga Prefecture, decorated in the yurihikinsai (gold-glazed overglaze) technique. The elaborate gold decoration and unusual flattened form give the piece a distinctive presence. It was purchased at Shobido in Arita and comes with its original tomobako (signed wooden box) and pamphlet.

Ono Jiro (1953-2010) was born in Ureshino, Saga Prefecture, the second son of Ono Hakuko, a holder of Saga Prefecture's Important Intangible Cultural Property for kinrande (gold brocade) and yurihikinsai techniques. He trained at the Arita ceramics testing center and joined the family's Kozan-gama kiln, founded by his grandfather Nobuyoshi Ono. After his mother's death he chose to inherit and continue her delicate technique himself. In 2001 one of his works was acquired by the British Museum, and in 2002 he established his own kiln, Kozan Tougei-sha, in Ureshino, producing brilliantly colored gold-decorated ware.
