An ejiko-form kokeshi of the Kijiyama lineage by the master craftsman Ogura Kyutaro of Akita, carved from Itaya maple. The ejiko (infant basket) was a container once used in farming villages to hold infants, functioning as a simple cradle. Plum blossoms are painted in sumi ink and red, with the head fitted into the body.
- Artist / Maker: Ogura Kyutaro (小椋久太郎)
- Subject / Motif: Plum blossoms, two at a time alternately at the chest and around the body; a single green lathe line at the neck, four alternating green and red lathe lines along the rim of the ejiko body, and red, two green, and red lathe lines on the base ring
- Technique: Painted in sumi ink and red with lathe lines; head fitted into the body
- Material: Itaya maple
- Dimensions: Height 111 mm, base width 65 mm, body diameter 110 mm
- Signature / Seal / Box: Signature clearly written in brush on the underside of the base
- Included: A card with the maker's words (1 sheet)
- Condition: Made about forty years ago when the craftsman was in his seventies; over the years wax has soaked into the wood, giving it a deep amber tone and a rich sheen. Stored long in a dark room, so the red shows no fading; two green lathe lines on the body rim show fading, as do the green lathe lines on the base ring. A 20 mm grain-movement mark is on the left body. Please refer to the photos for the item's current appearance and condition.
Ogura Kyutaro (1906-1998) was a celebrated modern master of the Kijiyama kokeshi tradition; his father was the craftsman Ogura Kyushiro.
