An elegant gourd-shaped (hisago) flower vase in Hagi ware, made by Notomi Choun of the Daikazan Choun kiln in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The upper half is finished with a soft, warm white Hagi glaze, while the lower half shows a robust, earthy glaze in deep blue tones, creating a beautiful contrast of light and shadow within a single vessel. The widening gourd form has long been regarded as an auspicious motif symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. Dating from the late Showa to Heisei period.
Hagi ware is celebrated in the saying "first Raku, second Hagi, third Karatsu," and has been deeply loved by tea practitioners for centuries. Suited for a flower vase in the tea room as well as for arranging seasonal flowers in a modern living space.
