Moriyoshi Saeki Zogan Inlay Tree Motif Ceramic Vase with Signed Wood Box

A ceramic flower vase by Moriyoshi Saeki, decorated with a tree motif rendered in his signature zogan (inlay) technique in colored clays. It comes with a tomobako (artist's signed wood box).

Moriyoshi Saeki (born 1949 in Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture) is a ceramic artist based in Mashiko, Tochigi, known for his signature zogan (inlay) technique depicting trees, forests and landscapes. He initially studied at Musashino Art University before transferring to Tokyo University of the Arts, graduating from its graduate program in 1975, and was inspired by Korean celadon inlay ware. He developed a distinctive style of inlaying differently colored clay into carved motifs to create painterly depictions of trees and landscapes rather than the geometric patterns typical of most inlay ware. His works have received numerous honors, including the Tochigi Prefecture Arts Festival Award, awards at the Japan Traditional Kogei exhibitions, and purchase of his work by the Imperial Household Agency in 2002. He is a member of the Japan Kogei Association and has also served as a part-time lecturer at Tokyo University of the Arts and Bunsei University of Art.
