A Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) depicting a samurai beneath blossoming cherry trees, painted by Matsumoto Fuko (1840-1923). Fuko was a Nihonga painter active from the late Edo period through the Meiji and Taisho eras, known for historical subjects, warrior imagery and figure paintings in a classically composed, realist-leaning style. He studied under masters including Oki Ichiga, Satake Eikai and Kikuchi Yosai, and led the Angado painting school in Tokyo.

The work is signed by the artist and comes in a plain storage box (awasebako).

  • Condition: There is fading (yake) and creasing. The roller ends (jikusaki) are missing.
