A guinomi sake cup by the ceramic artist Masahiko Imanishi, made in the kuro-tamba (black Tamba) style using the hikidashiguro (pulled-black) technique. The piece shows beautiful kiln effects (yohen) across its surface.
Masahiko Imanishi is a ceramic artist born in 1971 in Tamba-Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns regions. He completed training at the Kyoto Municipal Industrial Research Institute in 1995 and studied as a live-in apprentice under Akira Okamoto in Kyoto. He returned to Tamba in 2000 to begin his own production, working out of the Tachikui district. Imanishi personally gathers clay from mountain sites and fires his works in a traditional wood-fired 'jagama' (snake kiln), drawing inspiration from the Ko-Tamba (old Tamba) tradition. He is known for innovative variations on Tamba ware such as kuro-tamba (black Tamba) and shiro-tamba (white Tamba), alongside vessels showing natural ash-glaze effects (yohen).
