An avant-garde ceramic objet by Kentaro Kawabata, made from hand-built porcelain mixed with fragments of glass and finished with silver glaze. The glass partially melts during firing to create unique, unrepeatable color effects, while the wrinkles and folds left by the artist's hands become part of the work's expressive character.
Kentaro Kawabata is a Japanese ceramic artist born in 1976 in Saitama Prefecture. He completed studies at the Institute for Ceramic Studies in Tajimi City in 2000 and now works from a studio in Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture. His signature technique involves hand-building porcelain mixed with fragments of glass, which partially melt during firing to create unique, unrepeatable color effects beyond what glaze alone can achieve. He has received major awards including the Grand Prize at the Paramita Ceramic Art Grand Prize Exhibition (2007) and the Kamoda Shoji Prize at the Mashiko Ceramics Exhibition (2004). His work is held in the collections of the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Anadolu University Museum in Turkey, and the Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art, among others, and has been shown internationally including a 2017 solo exhibition in Kyoto.
