A stoneware (sekki) wall-hanging flower vase with a beast-head motif by the ceramic artist Ken Mihara. This piece was exhibited in one of the artist's solo exhibitions and is the very work pictured on the exhibition postcard.
Ken Mihara is a Japanese ceramic artist born in 1958 in Shimane Prefecture (in what is now Izumo City). In 1981 he began studying under Funaki Kenji. He is known for his unglazed stoneware works, often fired using natural ash and carbonization techniques to create earthy, textured surfaces. His accolades include the Grand Prize at the Chanoyu-no-Zokei exhibition, the Second Prize at the 1st Paramita Ceramic Art Grand Prize Exhibition, and the 2007 Japan Ceramic Society Award. His works are held in major public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among roughly 40 institutions worldwide.
