A Shino tea bowl by Kato Takuo, featuring the warm tones and soft white glaze characteristic of Mino Shino ware. This chawan carries an inviting, gentle character well suited to the tea ceremony.
Kato Takuo (1917–2005) was a Japanese ceramic artist born in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, and the sixth-generation head of the Kobei-gama kiln in Mino. After studying in Finland in 1961, he became fascinated with ancient Persian ceramics and spent decades researching and reviving the lost technique of luster-glaze ware, as well as Persian blue glaze and sancai (three-color) glaze. From 1980 he was commissioned by the Imperial Household Agency's Shosoin Repository to reconstruct Shosoin sancai ware, successfully recreating Nara sancai after about nine years of research. In recognition of these achievements he received the Purple Ribbon Medal in 1988 and was designated a Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property for Sansai) in 1995.
