Karatsu Ware Guinomi Sake Cup by Munehiko Maruta, E-Garatsu, with Signed Box

An E-Garatsu (painted Karatsu) guinomi sake cup by Munehiko Maruta. It combines the rustic yet powerful clay character of Karatsu ware with the deep, expressive scenery of iron-glaze painting. Its small, hand-friendly size enriches everyday sake drinking.

Munehiko Maruta is a contemporary Karatsu ware potter, born in 1961 as the second son of Karatsu ceramic artist Masami Maruta. In 1980 he studied under Atsuya Hamada, the third son of the renowned potter Shoji Hamada. In 1984 he returned to Kuromuta in Takeo City, Saga Prefecture, and began his own pottery practice. In 1987 he opened his Uchida Sarayagama climbing kiln, and later established the Sarayagawanobori-gama in 2000. His work has been featured on NHK BS programs and exhibited at institutions such as the Nomura Museum (2008) and the Kyushu Ceramic Museum (2018).
