A Japanese woodblock print (nishiki-e) by Inoue Yasuji (Tankei), a celebrated ukiyo-e artist of the Meiji era. This is "Fukiage Suspension Bridge," one image from the series "Tokyo Shinga Meisho Zukai" (Illustrated True Views of Famous Places in Tokyo), produced around Meiji 17 to 22 (1884 to 1889).
The print depicts the "Yamazato Iron Bridge" that once spanned the Dokan moat of the Fukiage Gardens within the imperial grounds. Designed in Meiji 3 by the British engineer Thomas Waters, it was the first iron suspension bridge in Japan, and it was later dismantled during the construction of the new palace, making this print a valuable record of its appearance. Inoue Yasuji applied the "kosen-ga" (ray-light) technique inherited from his teacher Kobayashi Kiyochika, capturing early Meiji Tokyo with expressive color and precise perspective. The same work is held in the collection of the Edo-Tokyo Museum.
