Honkin maki-e is a technique in which designs, patterns, or characters are drawn on the lacquer surface using finely powdered gold, then fixed to the surface by sprinkling gold or silver metallic powder and polishing before the lacquer dries. It is one of the techniques of lacquer art, known for its particularly luxurious beauty. The name honkin maki-e is said to carry the meaning of a technique and level of labor comparable to the daimyo wares of the Edo period.
