An iron sword guard (tsuba) in the Heianjo style, decorated with brass inlay and formed in the mokko (quince) shape with inome (boar's-eye) openwork. It dates from the Momoyama to Edo period and comes with a storage box.

  • Subject / Motif: Mokko (quince-shaped) form with inome (boar's-eye) openwork
  • Technique: Heianjo-style brass inlay with openwork
  • Material: Iron with brass inlay
  • Dimensions: Height approx. 7.6 cm, Width approx. 7.5 cm, Seppa-dai thickness approx. 0.4 cm, rim thickness approx. 0.4 cm; weight approx. 109.5 g
  • Included: Storage box
  • Condition: Examined with a loupe, the inlay shows only very minor chips and some thinning, but no significant losses. It remains in nearly complete condition. Measurements are taken by a non-professional, so please allow for slight margins of error. Please refer to the photos for the item's current appearance and condition.

This is a medium-sized tsuba with a well-balanced, comfortable feel in the hand. While many Heianjo tsuba are made in large sizes, this one has a nicely compact and taut form.
