A hanging scroll depicting Shoki, the demon-quelling martial deity, rendered in a bold ink-and-color (bokusai) Nanga style. The valiant figure is a traditional talismanic subject used to ward off evil.

Mizuta Chikuho (1883-1957), born in Osaka, was a Japanese Nanga (literati) painter. He studied under Himejima Chikugai and was a founding member of the Nihon Nanga-in in 1921. He won honors at the Bunten exhibitions and served as a Teiten committee member, and led the Seiga-kai painting academy.

Dimensions: Mounting incl. rollers approx. 63 x 190 cm; painting itself approx. 45 x 134 cm.

Condition: There are fine stains, yake (discoloration/foxing) and creasing. The mounting shows damage. Please refer to the photos for the item's current appearance and condition.
