Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku) depicting red and white plum blossoms with a bush warbler (uguisu), a classic auspicious New Year theme in Japanese poetry and painting. The pairing of plum and warbler is a traditional motif expressing an elegant, harmonious combination, with roots in classical Chinese verse. Painted on silk (kenpon).
Tsubouchi Shoan was born in Gifu Prefecture. He exhibited twice at the G Exhibition and specialized in landscape and bird-and-flower painting. He was a member of the Toyo Bijutsu-kai (Oriental Art Society).
