Hagi Ware Guinomi Sake Cup by Atsuyuki Ueda, Somezogan Wave Motif, D 7 cm

A Hagi ware guinomi sake cup by the ceramic artist Atsuyuki Ueda. The dark, tightly finished body is decorated with a wave motif. The design is carved and filled with gosu (cobalt blue) in the somezogan inlay technique.

Atsuyuki Ueda (born July 3, 1966, in Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture) is a Hagi ware ceramic artist. He studied under Katsumi Ko at Yamaguchi Junior College of Art, graduating from its ceramics research course in 1988, and then trained under Masahisa Kaneta at the Tenchozan kiln in Hagi. In 2000 he became independent and opened his own kiln, Shotozan-gama, in Sueda, Hofu City. Ueda blends traditional Hagi techniques with his own modern sensibility, working across tea wares, everyday tableware, objets, and vases. He is a regular member of the Japan Kogei Association and the Japan Ceramic Art Association, and has received numerous honors including selection at the Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition (2005 onward) and the Japan Traditional Kogei Exhibition (2010 onward), as well as the Economy, Trade and Industry Minister's Award at the West Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition (2010).

Hagi ware is known as a vessel that matures with use, changing its expression the more sake is enjoyed from it. This quality has long been prized and referred to as the seven transformations of Hagi.
