A crane-neck (tsurukubi) flower vase (hanaire) by Eiraku Zengoro, finished in purple Kochi (shikochi) glaze. The slender neck and lustrous, mirror-like glazed surface give the vase a commanding presence in a tokonoma alcove, and it is a vase of fitting grade for use in formal tea gatherings (chaji).

  • Artist / Maker: Eiraku Zengoro (永楽善五郎)
  • Subject / Motif: Crane-neck (tsurukubi) form flower vase
  • Technique: Purple Kochi (shikochi) glaze
  • Dimensions: Mouth inner diameter 1.5 cm, Height 27 cm, Width 7.2 cm (measured by an amateur; slight margin of error)
  • Signature / Seal / Box: Eiraku seal on the piece; matching box (tomobako)
  • Included: Matching box (tomobako) and a 100% silk furoshiki wrapping cloth
  • Condition: An older piece with signs of use, yet the surface retains a brilliant, mirror-like gloss. There is one small flaw, located toward the 10 o'clock direction when the Eiraku seal is set at 12 o'clock, so it is not visible from the front and is hard to notice unless examined closely.

Eiraku Zengoro is one of the Senke Jusshoku, the ten hereditary craft houses serving the Sen family tea tradition.
