An antique hanging flower vase (kakehanaire) in the uzukumaru form, made of ceramic (stoneware) with a natural ash glaze (bidoro) and a strong, rustic landscape. The characters "Bunka san" are incised directly into the base of the vessel before firing, and an iron ring has been fitted to the shoulder so it can be hung as a kakehanaire.
- Technique: Natural ash glaze (bidoro) from melted, flowing wood-fire ash, or applied ash glaze; olive-green to pale green glaze covering the body
- Material: Ceramic (stoneware)
- Signature / Seal / Box: "Bunka san" incised directly into the base before firing, matching the "Bunka 3" label on the accompanying period box
- Included: Tomobako; accompanying period box with a "Bunka 3" (1806) label; iron hanging fitting (kan) fitted to the right shoulder
- Condition: Some scratches and dirt. Stored by a private individual. Please refer to the photos for the item's current appearance and condition.
The form has broad shoulders tapering slightly toward the base, with a low center of gravity and a stable, solid stance typical of Edo-period oil jar proportions. An iron ring (kan) has been fitted to the right shoulder so it can be hung on a wall or pillar, transforming it into an elegant kakehanaire.
In the world of tea, rustic and powerful provincial wares like this have long been cherished when adapted as flower vessels. The incised characters match the "Bunka 3" label on the accompanying period box, dated 1806.
