This is a small antique three-tier confection cabinet (kashi-dansu) measuring just four sun (about 12 cm). The lightweight kiri (paulownia) wood-grain base is finished in a kijinuri lacquer technique that lets the natural grain show through. Across all four sides and the lid are elegant Japanese bird-and-flower (kacho) paintings, including a snowy countryside cottage with a crow, autumn grasses, chrysanthemums, plum with a warbler, and pine, among other motifs. A small window in the outer box offers glimpses of the scenes within. It suits use for entertaining guests, as a tokonoma alcove display, or as a small storage piece.
