An antique document box (fumibako) finished in black urushi lacquer and decorated with maki-e designs of butterflies, peonies, and flowering plants. The lid is centered on a butterfly motif with scattered peony and floral patterns, while butterfly motifs also appear on the sides.
Subject / Motif: Butterflies, peonies, and flowering plants
Technique: Maki-e
Material: Urushi lacquer (black)
Condition: No noticeable scratches or stains on the body, which remains in excellent condition. The cord and outer box show deterioration. Dust visible in the photos comes from the deteriorated cord and is not damage. Please refer to the photos for the item's current appearance and condition.
The golden decoration stands out crisply against the black lacquer ground, giving the box a clean and refined appearance. The seller believes the box may date from around the Meiji period, though the exact date of production is unknown.
