An antique Japanese sword guard (tsuba) in the mokko-gata (four-lobed) form with rounded sides. It is made of iron with a substantial, weighty feel. The surface is finely carved with a figure resembling a sage or hermit alongside plum (or chrysanthemum) blossoms, and gold inlay (kinzogan) accents the flower centers and the objects held by the figure.
