This is the second tattoo photobook by photographer Masato Sudo, who has spent over 35 years engaging with the tattooed body and the interplay of stillness and motion, illusion and reality. The volume presents the work of the acclaimed contemporary tattoo master Horiyoshi III, documented across some 20 people bearing his full-body irezumi. It combines studio images that convey the extraordinary precision of the carving with outdoor performances staged in nature, offering an immersive view of the master's world.
Rooted in Japanese and Chinese aesthetic traditions, the designs depict subjects such as the Suikoden heroes, dragons, and carp ascending a waterfall, among other motifs, presenting the tattooed body as a form of living sculpture that conveys a distinctly Japanese sense of beauty.
