A Kyoto lacquer (Kyo-nuri) writing box (suzuribako) decorated with camellia in gold maki-e. The camellia is rendered slightly thick for a subtle raised, three-dimensional effect, and only the center of each flower is set with raden (mother-of-pearl) inlay, with blue-shell fragments showing beautifully in places. The surface finish is refined and elegant. It includes an inkstone (long rectangular type) and a pure silver water dropper marked with a silver hallmark, presented in a wooden lacquered box.

Condition: Good. There is age- and use-related lacquer cracking with chipping and lacquer loss at the lower corner beneath the "Kyoto-nuri" mark and at a corner of the lid; a single line crack in the lacquer at one corner, and small lacquer loss at a corner of the container. The inkstone shows little sign of use. The pure silver water dropper has darkened somewhat, while the base and fitted areas retain a clean silver tone. Sturdy and fully usable as a practical item.
