He developed a distinctive yuri kinsai (gold decoration under glaze) technique after encountering the work of Kato Hajime, becoming its leading master. His works have won numerous awards, including the Takamatsu-no-miya Memorial Prize (1992) at the Japan Traditional Kogei Exhibition. In 2001 he was designated a Living National Treasure (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property) for his yuri kinsai technique, and he later received the Medal with Purple Ribbon and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.
