She originally aspired to become a Nihonga (Japanese-style) painter, studying under Nozawa Ryoshu, a disciple of Kawai Gyokudo, and in 1961 received the go (art name) 'Ryoka' from her teacher. She began making kokeshi around 1958, initially as a side income to fund her painting supplies, and went on to develop a distinctive style based on Nihonga painting techniques.
