He studied at Musashino Art University before transferring to and graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts' craft department in 1975. He became devoted to the Korean inlay (zogan) celadon technique after a trip to Korea, and developed a distinctive style combining neriage with zogan inlay to depict tree and forest motifs in a painterly manner.
