She began her career painting designs on pottery, later studying ceramic form under artists such as Kazuo Yagi and Junkichi Kumakura. Inspired by shards of old Shigaraki ware, she began firing works in a traditional wood-burning anagama kiln (known as her 'Zungoe' kiln) from 1970, reviving the natural ash-glaze technique without applied glazes. At a time when women were traditionally barred from entering kiln sites in Shigaraki, she broke ground as one of the region's first recognized female potters.
