In 1980 he studied under Atsuya Hamada, the third son of the renowned potter Shoji Hamada. In 1984 he returned to Kuromuta in Takeo City, Saga Prefecture, and began his own pottery practice. In 1987 he opened his Uchida Sarayagama climbing kiln, and later established the Sarayagawanobori-gama in 2000.
