Around 1940 he studied under Ishiguro Munemaro, a master of iron-glazed ceramics, and became independent in Gojozaka in 1945. In 1970 he moved to the foot of Mt. Hira in Shiga Prefecture and built his climbing kiln, Horai-gama, producing work rooted in Chinese Song-dynasty iron-glaze traditions with a modern sensibility, including celadon. In 1985 he was recognised as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure). Read our in-depth profile on Shimizu Uichi’s life and techniques →

The piece — Height approx. 25.5 cm, width approx. 12.5 cm.

Condition & box — There is a small area of glaze loss at the mouth (see the sixth photo).
